December 2021 Book of the Month
Author: Tim Keller
Title: Hidden Christmas: The Suprising Truth Behind the Birth of Christ
I can't believe it's December of 2021 already! How did this year go by so quickly? As we wrap up the year, so-to-speak, and look forward to Christmas, I thought there was no better book for this month than Pastor Timothy Keller's Hidden Christmas: The Surpising Truth Behind the Birth of Christ.
Like most of Pastor Tim Keller's books, Hidden Christmas is engaging, moving, and Christocentric. It is simple to read yet so profound that you would probably have to read his words, sentences, and paragraphs again and again.
"Even people who are not practicing Christians think they are familiar with the story of the nativity. Every Christmas displays of Baby Jesus resting in a manger decorate lawns and churchyards, and songs about shepherds and angels fill the air. Yet despite the abundance of these Christian references in popular culture, how many of us have examined the hard edges of this Biblical story?"
That last question is so true. How many of us have examined the hard edges of the Christmas story?
When you read this book, you will find a newfound understanding of how significant it was that God became man (the incarnation of Christ). If you are in our EQUIP Bible Reading, you know how difficult and arduous it was for the Isralites to even approach God in either the Tabernacle or the Temple. The entire book of Leviticus is a manual for the Israelites on how to approach this inflexibly holy God.
And yet, all of a sudden, God comes as a helpless babe. God comes!
Tim Keller writes in Hidden Christmas, "Christmas is not "Once upon a time story that happened that shows us how we should live better lives." No! He broke into the world to save us. Christ the savior is born" (p. 39).
December is all about Jesus. I highly recommend this book so that you can read about the Gospel wrapped in the Christmas story.
Rooting for you,
